Other Char Groups

There are not too many Arctic Char groups out there, but these sites have arctic char content, or are worth a visit for their own merits...

:
The Norwegian Flyshop started out as a site dedicated to flyfishing. This is still the focus for much of their work but a lot of additional subjects have been developed. They encourage the flyfisherman and the general public to make use of the resource they provide.  This is a comprehensive site and one which anglers, conservationists and you should visit.
Contains excellent pages on Flyfishing for Arctic char in Norwegian rivers by Justus Felix Wehmer.

Salmon or sea-run char? Fishing For Arctic Char in Greenland
Photo by Peter Steensen
Comprehensive information on all forms of angling for arctic char written by Peter Steensen for Greenland Tourism, the national tourist board of Greenland.  This highly informative site also gives information about angling for other species in Greenland.   This is not a site to miss.  (Is that a salmon or a sea run char?)

An excellent Web site concentrating primarily on genetics.   Any geneticists out there need to see this site and the same goes for fisheries biologists, scientists and managers.  Anglers and lay people will find the site informative and thoughful, though at times a bit too in depth, although a glossary is provided for those unafraid of a little hard work.

The Wild Trout Society was created on 1 March 1997 in order to conserve the wild trout of Britain and Ireland through the protection and restoration of their habitats.

The Society brings together individuals, fishing clubs and riparian owners and channels their efforts and resources:

  • they pursue conservation through education - raising the profile of the wild trout and of the issues fundamental to its welfare;
  • they restore degraded habitats by initiating and managing our own rehabilitation projects; by funding existing restoration schemes; and by encouraging and assisting others in drawing up, funding and implementing their own projects;
  • they act as a source of information about habitat protection and restoration techniques ranging from simple and cheap ideas for enhancing an individual lake or stretch of river up to guidelines for the management of an entire catchment area.
tulogo.gif (5003 bytes)Trout Unlimited
With a mission to conserve, protect, and restore North America's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds, Trout Unlimited celebrated its fortieth birthday in 1998. With 100,000 volunteers organised in 450 local chapters, Trout Unlimited has built its reputation as an organisation of conservation-minded anglers who promote quality trout and salmon fisheries both for their intrinsic value and as reminders of watershed health.
In November 1997, The Wild Trout Society and Trout Unlimited signed a Joint Co-operative Agreement to enable the exchange of scientific, habitat and recreational fisheries information. Under the Agreement, each organisation recognises the other as the principal source of such information in their respective countries.

The  Flyfishing Forum allows you to  interact with fellow flyfishermen from the wild world of flyfishing on the web.  New members are showing up all the time.  Give a little knowledge, get a lot in return.  The Forum researches, tests and shares what others have to say... or else they  put their minds together and figure it out theirselves! The Forum also features the adventures of  Forum Members and also presents the world of fly fishing locations, guides and resorts at your fingertips.

headertroutsite[1].gif (6793 bytes)     Troutsite is, as it says, the official site of James Prosek.   'Who is James Prosek?' you ask.   Click to find out.  Is he the current Audobon?  I don't know.  Is he a trout and char nut? Yes.  Is that all that counts?  Well, I am inclined to think so...

The Salmon and Trout Conservation Network (SATCON) has been established in early 2000 to provide an independent forum for the salmonid conservation community in the British Isles and beyond.

SATCON is an independent, non-profit, volunteer-run organisation that endeavours to harness the opportunities provided by the internet to contribute to the building and support of the salmonid conservation community. SATCON is supported by the Salmon and Trout Association and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, and works closely with salmonid conservation organisations throughout the UK.

In the words of this Japanese website's designer and writer, Yoshikazu Fujioka;
"I was deeply moved by the beauty of the Trout which I caught in my first fishing. Since then I began to draw trouts and streams as another pleasure of fishing. With my pictures I hope I can send feelings of seasons, rich nature in The Mountain Village and, of course, vivid expressions of lovely Trouts, I have enjoyed fishing there."
